Q. How
does the table maker work?
A. When the user clicks 'Make Table', the selected
variables, years, and other information entered by the user is passed to Unicon's web
server. The server converts this material to a Stata "do-file".
It then starts Stata, on the server, which runs the do-file, creating a log. When Stata
finishes, the table is extracted from the log and sent back to the user. The graph and
regression functions work in a similar way. Stata Corporation is one of our sister
companies.
Q. If I can make tables and graphs, run
regressions, and extract CPS data from this web site, why would I want to buy CPS Utilities CDs?
A. CPS on Web can only process a limited number of
variables at a time for tables, graphs, and regressions. There is also a limit on the
memory allocated to any operation. If you try to make a large multi-year table, you
may get an insufficient-memory message instead of your result. You may find you need
to do more with CPS data than just run the available functions on a few variables.
Extractions from this site already require a subscription, and we may eventually extend the
subscription requirement to other CPS on Web functions. You may find the Internet
connection too slow, or you may want the security of being able to see and touch the data
source. See our home page for details of CPS on CD.
